Sharing a Future

The past few years have involved intense planning, and each step brings us to a new beginning.  Considering the size, location, history, and importance of this site, our resources have been modest, so we clear, plant, and plan simultaneously, engaging community members on all levels throughout the process.  In this way, the voices of the land and the community are the leading presence in the planning process.

Ho'oulu 'Aina depends upon community involvement, beginning with the initial work by a community planning board who dedicated much time and effort to establish Ho'oulu 'Aina as a land-base for Kalihi Valley.  This first planning board included the very members of the community who fought to protect this land from development, and they continue to fight for pono, or balance, in Kalihi valley.

In 2008, we engaged in a strategic planning process that helped define Ho'oulu 'Aina's key strengths and valuable resources.  We learned to effectively utilize the waiwai, or riches, that exist within the land, staff, volunteer base, and KKV as an organization, a crucial step in creating the land-base right for Kalihi.  Building upon that strategic planning process, we continually seek expert advise regarding water, soil.forestry, food production, and resource management.  Many scientists, farmers, and foresters generouly contribute their thoughts and time to help the plan progress.

We hope our plan will never be final or finite, rather always in a state of continual growth as we respond to the needs of the land and collect the stories, ideas, and contributions of involved community members.
